Pink is the name of a pop singer and it has helped raise money for breast cancer awareness but it’s the worst paint choice that you can make for your home if you plan to sell it any time in the future. I have heard grown men laugh out loud upon entering a pink room and I have watched families come into an open house……and quickly go out again, with smirks and scrunched up faces, looking down all the way so I won’t speak to them, after stepping into a pink foyer. There was a time in the eighties when the pink and grey combination was very popular. People wanted grey brick houses, grey furniture with gold accents, grey rugs and pink walls. And sometimes powder blues were tossed around as well with hints of mint green. That was fifteen to twenty years ago. If your home is still pink and grey…it’s really seriously time to consider a change. Kinda like not wearing shoulder pads anymore. I can hear Mother’s starting to mutter as they read this having just finished painting their daughter’s room a lovely pastel pink. Yup, I did this one too. My daughter’s room when she was little was the worst chartreusy kinda pink you can imagine and I did sell that home, but it was the only room like that. The rest of my house was done in welcoming warm earth tones. So if your daughter’s room is pink, it’s fine, just don’t let it spread through the rest of the house. And then there’s Blue. Second only to pink as the “put anything else but this” on your wall colour. I can hear the muttering again…. I know that right now the hottest design colours are chocolate brown and blue and I know that boy’s rooms are supposed to be blue ( it’s an unwritten gender law ) but it’s still not a great idea. The sky’s blue, the ocean’s blue and walls aren’t ….if you want to sell a house. It’s a really tricky colour , and generally speaking, it creates a cold feeling and very often drifts towards grey. (oops, back to the eighties! ) If you plan to put your house on the market, remember that a buyer wants to walk into a place that looks like where they want to live, not where you still do. Make sure you have someone go through your home before you list to help you create a light filled, warm and inviting environment that will appeal to most buyers. Colour has a huge impact on us. Red can make us antsy ( although I love it ) and white’s something you wear in a church. And pink, whether we like it or not, conjures up all things feminine, which leaves out almost half of the population. Paint is relatively cheap. It’s an investment that could bring you thousands of dollars more when you sell. And then you’ll have lots more money to “pinkify” your next home! |
